Center Stage

Yesterday began as a normal Thursday. I woke up wondering what I was going to do in this beautiful city...with an extremely small budget. I've been wanting to attend the NYC Ballet for a long time and when I learned they had student rush tickets it made me want to go even more! I happen to check the website yesterday and see that there were still rush tickets available! I knew we weren't going to get wonderful seats as the tickets were only $15 but I mainly just wanted the experience of going to a Ballet at Lincoln Center.

By 7pm Vicki and I arrived to pick up our tickets for the 8pm show. I marveled at the beautiful marble floors, staircases and sculptures that surrounded me and I was beyond excited about seeing the inside of the theatre.  I've always been a huge fan of the movie Center Stage and for those of you who've seen it then you know it takes place in New York at a fictional ballet company. So basically I felt as though I was in the movie since several scenes took place in the rooms I was walking in.

Once we were allowed to enter the theatre a lady approached us asking if she could help us to our seats.  I handed her my ticket and said just point us up to the highest seat because I'm sure that's where we are! She looked at my ticket, handed it back and said no you are right over here in the Orchestra! These are very good seats! I couldn't believe it. I asked her again to make sure but it was true! She led us to our seats that were maybe 25 rows from the stage almost directly in the center. I was still in awe. We were sitting in seats that sold for more than $100! I was in heaven.

The lights dimmed and after hearing an introduction from the orchestra director the ballet began. It was beautiful, simply beautiful. There were a total of three ballets performed and we had an intermission after the first and second. The first was very traditional with only two main dancers. The second was my absolute favorite as it reminded me very much of the ending performance of Center Stage with two guys biding for a girls attention with lots of fast paced moves and a good amount of background dancers. The third had a old time Renaissance feel to me and half the group were en pointe while the other half were not. All three were spectacular and I found myself completely entranced by their every move.

It was one of my favorite nights in New York thus far. And the sheer surprise of getting to sit so close made it that much more special.  We're hoping to get tickets to Swan Lake in February and I'm so excited!

If you ever get a chance to attend the NYC Ballet, take it! You will NOT be disappointed!

Oh to live like Carrie Bradshaw/SJP

Vicki and I officially wrote down our NYC Bucket List and we've been crossing things off left and right!

Last Friday night Vicki and I headed uptown to the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art...for those who don't know). I'd been wanting to go but I wanted to wait until Friday evening because they have free Fridays! I was most looking forward to looking at the paintings and here are some of my absolute favorite:

Those of you who read my blog when I interned in NYC know that I love going to movie sets and I have this great website that tells me all the locations throughout the city. Well, I'd seen that Sarah Jessica Parker was starring in a new movie down by Wall Street so Vicki and I headed down to see if we could see anything. Knowing it was a long shot that SJP would actually be seen we wondered around without any success. After taking a stroll down Wall Street we decided to head back because we were absolutely freezing. As we were crossing the street I noticed a large white sheet that could only mean one thing- a film set! I dragged Vicki over and I looked in the window to see SARAH JESSICA PARKER!! I literally grabbed Vicki's arm and shoved her closer to me saying, "There she is!! She's RIGHT THERE!" It was so neat to actually see her live!! Being a huge Sex and the City fan I find SJP THE New Yorker to see. We watched them film for a bit before leaving. I can't wait to see her new movie "I Don't Know How She Does It" when it comes out!

Continuing on our Sex and the City kick, we decided to walk over to Carrie Bradshaw's apartment. If you watch the show then you know the exact NYC Brownstone I am referring too! It was only a quick walk to get over there and we knew it the moment we laid eyes on it. I know we're dorks but we don't care.

So there's 3 things checked off the list! Can't wait to do some more! :-)

Excuse me but where did you buy your sled?

It's been 5 days since Auburn won the National Championship and I think I'm still on an Auburn high from it! The game started at 8:30pm on Monday but knowing how crowded the bar gets Vicki, Jordan and I got there super early to grab a table. The two hours went by fast as the bar filled up with excited Auburn fans who turned the bar into the student section by calling cheers and singing the fight song. It was the best place to be in the city! After an intense game the clock finally hit 0:00 and the bar went NUTS!! I swear it felt as if I was at Jordan-Hare with the amount of screaming taking place.  We then walked outside to find toilet paper being thrown in celebration all over a tree in front of the bar. It was amazing to see all the NYC Auburn fans and the screams of War Eagle could be heard for blocks!

Tuesday brought NYC's second snow storm of the season and we were definitely more prepared this time! The snow started Tuesday night and by Wednesday morning there was a beautiful 6 inch coating of snow over the city. Vicki and I were eager to get outside to go play! Unfortunately we didn't have real sleds so we found a make shift one at Bed Bath and Beyond. Well that ended up being a total disaster as our poor little fake sleds didn't work at all! We went up to the Upper East Side at 72nd/5th to go sledding at this hill that is rated as one of the best places to sled in the city in Central Park! There were so many people out having a great time and all we wanted to do was in join in the fun. We walked around for hours trying to find a sled with no success. How can a city were EVERYONE has a sled not have a single store that sells one?? We were baffled. Finally we gave up and came home to warm up after roaming the streets for a few hours.

I wasn't going to give up though so after many (MANY) phone calls around the city, I finally found a place that sold sleds! I immediately went to get it so that we could have sledding round two the next morning.

Before any sledding could take place I had an interview! Yesterday morning I had a great interview for a paid internship and I also received news that  I wasn't offered an interview for an extremely competitive job that I was really hoping to get. No, this isn't the NYC job that I just interviewed for but I was still disappointed.  I keep telling myself that everything happens for a reason...

But I wasn't going to let that get me down because Vicki and I had plans to go sledding again! We dressed as warmly as we could and headed back up to the UES with our legit sled in hand! There was no one at the hill when we got there so we had it all to ourselves! The fluffy soft snow from the day prior had been compacted to harder icier snow- but that just meant our sled went so much faster! We stayed for about 45 minutes before heading back down to the Village as we were both frozen to the bone. But it was SO worth it!

Ever to conquer Never to yield!

Only 10 days into the new year and I feel 2011 has been pretty darn great so far! As most of you know I rang in the new year while babysitting on the Upper East Side and it couldn't have been for a nicer family.

I ended up getting the name of a temp agency from the family I babysat and had a great meeting with them last week. I'm excited about the opportunity to work with them for a while until I hear back on the big job interview I had. But first things first....

Last Wednesday I took a train into Morristown to celebrate my grandpa's birthday but what made it even better was Dad and Colleen flew up to surprise him as well! I went with my grandma to pick them up from the airport and of course we stopped for a delicious lunch at Friendly's! We spent the rest of the day around the house while grandpa was still at work and man was he surprised when he came home! We went and ate at this amazingly fancy Italian restaurant where the Ahi Tuna was sinfully delicious. I however had to call it an early night as I had a 5:58am train to catch the next morning.  I had such an amazing time catching up with everyone and I wish I could have spent more time with Dad and Colleen. I also wish Mom and Cori could have come up too but unfortunately they were already in school.

5am alarms are never fun but I got out of bed, said my goodbyes to everyone and headed back into the city for the interview that I've been looking forward to for weeks. Again I'm not going to say specific names but man did I love this place. I really felt like I fit in with everyone who I met. I was there for nearly 4 hours but I enjoyed every second of it. I will definitely keep everyone updated on this as I hear more but please keep your fingers crossed for me!

Vicki is FINALLY back in town after going home to Birmingham for what felt like forever. We've wasted no time on getting back into having the time of our lives in the city. On Saturday we made our way up to the Upper West Side to eat at Shake Shack (something that's been on our NYC bucket list) and also had a little too much fun trying on dresses way out of our price range at Saks. Yesterday we hit up Bloomingdales, Dylans Candy Bar and finished the night at a diner right around the corner from the Markle for dinner.

I'd love to write more but in case you live under a rock today is the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP and I've got get ready to cheer on my Auburn Tigers! WAR EAGLE!
